The Townsville NBN-enabled diabetes telehealth trial commenced delivering telehealth services in April 2012.
Under the trial, patients with type 2 diabetes are able to access a range of health services from their homes, including:
- in home telehealth monitoring and medical triage from the care coordinator
- virtual consultations allowing patients to communicate with their care coordinator and, where required, their GPs through high-definition video
- online healthy living information and support for improving wellbeing.
The NBN enabled telehealth services delivered through this trial will support Australians with type 2 diabetes in better managing their health needs from home.
It will also provide information on how such services could be more broadly deployed at the conclusion of the trial.
The trial will target people living in the NBN rollout areas in Townsville as they become available.
The trial is being funded by the Australian Government in partnership with the Queensland Government under the Digital Regions Initiative.
It is being delivered by the Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local in collaboration with the Townsville Health Service District and Queensland Health.
