Why is it important?

Delivering more opportunities for regional communities

Regional Australia decorative logo The NBN will give Australians greater access to goods, services, education and employment opportunities online, no matter where they live. In fact, the communities that stand to benefit the most from the NBN are those in regional areas.
Distance, once a defining barrier for regional Australians, will become increasingly irrelevant once the NBN is introduced. Online engagement can reduce feelings of isolation and enhance family relationships. It can be of particular value to families or family members who are geographically isolated or live far from home.

In the UK, the Rural Commission has noted the positive impact of broadband on rural communities. Specifically:

  • Businesses owners have relocated from urban areas to enjoy a better quality of life in regional areas
  • Teleworking (or working from home) and online services have slowed down out-migration and attracted in-migration
  • Regional businesses can now tap into worldwide markets.
  • The retention of rural services.
