Government initiatives

Digital Economy Goal: by 2020, Australia will rank in the top five Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries in the percentage of households that connect to broadband at home.

To assist us in realising this goal, the Government is currently undertaking the following initiatives:

Broadband for Seniors Program

In the 2011-12 Budget, the government provided a further $10.4 million over four years from July 2011 to continue this program, which provides seniors with free access to the internet and assists them in gaining confidence in using computer technology. Kiosks are located where seniors can gain access including in community centres, retirement villages, nursing facilities, libraries and clubs. Show me more

Digital Communities

To help more Australian households get online and to narrow the gap between Australian households and businesses in capital cities compared with those in regional, rural and remote Australia, the Digital Communities initiative will provide $23.8 million over three years. Show me more
