NBN Interim Satellite Service
Ahead of its long term NBN satellite launch in 2015, NBN Co has put in place an interim service.
The NBN Interim Satellite Service (ISS) offers eligible rural and remote users access to improved satellite broadband services and is designed to assist the transition from the Australian Broadband Guarantee (ABG) program to the long-term satellite solution.
This new service is targeted at customers who do not have access to a metro-comparable broadband service.
The ISS offers users peak speeds of 6 megabits per second (Mbps) download and one Mbps upload.
Seven retail service providers (Harbour IT, Skymesh, Clear Networks, Bordernet, Activ8Me, Reachnet and ANT) are now offering commercial ISS services.
NBN Co manages customer eligibility for the service through a set of business rules, ensuring that first priority is given to those who do not have alternate broadband access. For more information on eligibility visit NBN Co’s website or call NBN Co’s Solution Centre on freecall 1800 881 816.
NBN Long Term Satellite Service
NBN Co has signed a contract for the delivery of two Ka-band satellites and associated tracking, telemetry and control systems, as part of the NBN long term satellite service.
The two new satellites mean that upon launch in 2015, NBN Co will be able to offer a 12 megabits per second (Mbps) download and one Mbps upload service, at uniform national wholesale prices, to premises outside the NBN fibre and fixed wireless footprints.
This will deliver a step-change in performance for satellite users, both in terms of speed and reliability, compared with existing satellite services.
