The internet isn’t just about accessing websites, it’s also about the things we use. Find out how the NBN will help our homes become smarter, faster.
With optic fibre being connected directly to 93 per cent of homes and businesses, people will have increased opportunities to use the internet in new and innovative ways that can save time and money.
Devices and appliances in our homes are becoming ‘smarter’, and able to connect to the internet. People can now manage their smart devices through their smartphones, tablets or televisions.
In addition to your regular activities on the internet, your smoke and security alarms, health monitors, climate controls, water and energy management systems could also be connected to the internet and controlled remotely.
While each of these activities may only use a small amount of our data and internet connection’s capacity, when lots of devices are using the internet at the same time, we need a system that can support all of these uses and not slow down the connection speed.
The NBN will deliver high-speed, reliable broadband that our increasingly connected homes need.
Optic fibre is a robust and reliable broadband technology which supports applications that need reliable internet performance as well as high speeds and capacity.
The NBN will also help us get the most out of home wi-fi networks. Current wi-fi routers (for example 802.11n) are able to support speeds of 300 megabits per second or more, with NBN fibre already offering speeds of up to 100 megabits per second. This means a wi-fi router connected to the NBN fibre network will able to support multiple people using high bandwidth applications at the same time.
With the NBN, you and your smart devices in your home can access fast, reliable broadband for today and the possibilities of tomorrow.
